TEACHERS' PROFILES
Lucio BATTISTOTTI Present position: Director of the Representation in Italy of the European Commission.
Profile: Graduated in Political Science, after an experience in the bank sector, since 1983 he has been working for the European Commission (Financial audit) and for the Cabinet of the European Commissioner Emma Bonino, dealing with financial matters and with relations with the European Parliament. Then he returned to the direction of financial control in his capacity as Head of Unit. He was Assistant Chief of Delegation of the European Commission in Italy. He was Head of Unit, responsible for the audit of the management of the European Social Fund and Head of Unit for the management of the ESF in Spain, Denmark and Finland. Since 1999, he has cooperated with the Padua University where, since 2007, he has been a member of the Master in European Studies Scientific Committee. He has contributed to various publications in the field of the administration and finance.

Maurizio BOCCACCI MARIANI Present position: Full professor of Commodity Science at Sapienza University of Rome, tenured in teaching “Energy, Raw Material and Innovation” and “Environmental Management”.
Profile: Graduated in Chemistry, Ph.D. in Food Commodities, researcher, associate professor and full professor of Commodity Sciences in the Faculty of Economics of Sapienza University of Rome. Since 1996 he has been Italian representative in the Council of Europe Commission of Experts on “Contact between food and other materials”. Professor of “Modern systems for quality assurance, security and health”, he is coordinator of the module “Health Economics and Environmental Sustainability” and teacher of “Environmental Sustainability” in EuroSapienza International Master courses.
Janet BOWKER Present position: Researcher and Adjunct Professor in English Studies and Translation, Sapienza University of Rome
Profile: Janet Bowker received her university education and training at the Universities of Reading and London, UK. For the last 28 years she has taught English at the Sapienza University of Rome, Faculty of Economics. She is the coordinator for computer-mediated testing in the English Department, and has also served on the Cambridge University Syndicate of English Testing for Central Italy , as well as being co-writer for testing material for the Italian Chamber of Deputies. She has published numerous courses and articles focussing on ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and EAP (English for Academic Purposes). Her research interests lie mainly in testing, European language policy, business discourse analysis and cognitive and socio-pragmatics. She is part of the Faculty commission for “Erasmus and Life-Long Learning Projects”, and holds regular workshops and seminars involving regional institutions, “Sapienza e Lavoro”, and student organizations, aimed at the integration of new graduates into the world of work.

Giuseppe BURGIO Present position: Director of EuroSapienza and full Professor of Statistics at Sapienza University of Rome.
Profile: Graduated cum laude in Economics at the University of Palermo, he owns the H.C. Ph.D. in Economic Sciences of the Budapest University of Economic Sciences. At the University of Palermo, he was professor and director of the Institute of Statistics and Rector delegate for European relations. For more than four years he was teaching at the National University of Somalia, where he was coordinator of the Faculties of Economics and Agriculture. In 1990 he joined Sapienza University and in 1992 was elected director of the School of Specialization in Law and Economics of the European communities also chairing the University Commission for European programmes. For two years he was statistical consultant of the Ministry of Public Administration and author of reports published by the Presidency of the Council of Ministries. He was working with organizations in Europe, Asia, Africa and the United States. He was President of CESD-Rome (Centre for the international statistic cooperation) and Director of Formstat (consortium between ISTAT, School of Administration of the Ministry for Interior and FORMEZ). On behalf of the European Commission he has made surveys on the labour force in Uzbekistan, directed the European Institute of Cyprus and coordinated European programmes in Eastern Europe. He is deputy President of the Centre International de Formation Européenne and member of the International Advisory Committee of the Corvinus University in Budapest. He is also member of many scientific societies and author of about 100 articles and monographs on methodological and applied statistics as well as on the main European policies.

Gabriele CIPRIANI Present position: Head of the Audit II Group “Structural policies, Transports, Research and Energy” of the European Court of Auditors.
Profile: Degree in Political Science at Bologna University, and Master on European Law at the College of Europe in Bruges. In 1978 he joined the European Court of Auditors holding several positions: Auditor for Regional Funds and EU financial resources, Head of External Relations service, Head of Personnel and Administration, Head of “GDP and GNI EU financial resources”, Head of Group Audit IV “Revenue, Banking, Operating Expenses, EU institutions and Bodies and Internal Policies”. He is the author of contributed papers on European public finance (National accounts, Audit, Impact and quality of the EU expenditure, Implementation and Reform of the EU budget), and of a book on future options for the EU budget. He was lecturing on European Economics, finance and institutions at “Tor Vergata” University of Rome and at the Tuscia University in Viterbo. He is a member of the Italian Society of Public Economics.

Carlo CURTI GIALDINO Present position: Associate Professor of International Law at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the Sapienza University of Rome, where he also teaches International organization (advanced course). Legal Adviser for the Ministry of Tourism. Member of the Italian Delegation to the Council of the European University Institute (since 2003).
Profile: Graduates with honour in Political Science in 1972.
Legal advisor to the juridical service of FAO (1972-1982) for the international law of no maritime waters. He was member of the EU Court of Justice and later Head of Cabinet of the General Attorney and Judge of the Court (1982-2000). In 2001 he was Head of Cabinet of the Ministry for Equal Opportunities and from 2000 to 2005 legal adviser of the Ministry for Community Policies. From 2002 to 2005 he was Chief Executive of the Italian National Centre for European Information and Documentation. He is the author of numerous articles, of a Manual of international law and of six monographs on European Union Law.

Massimo GAIANI Present position: Diplomatic Advisor of the Ministry for Community Policies and Director General of the Secretariat of the Interdepartmental Committee for European Community Affairs (CIACE).
Profile: Graduated with honours in Economics at Sapienza University of Rome, in 1982 begins a diplomatic career and holding several roles in the Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry. He has also been Head of Office II of DG for European Integration. He served in the Italian diplomatic delegations in Montreal and Washington and at the Permanent Representation of Italy to the European Union in Brussels. He was diplomatic Advisor of the Ministry of Economy and economic planning. He taught at the High School of Public Administration and Italian Universities. He is coordinator for the Italian annual report on the progress in fulfilling the Lisbon Strategy.

Luciano MARCELLO MILONE Present position: Full professor of Economic Policy, Faculty of Economics, Sapienza University of Rome.
Profile: Graduated with honours in Economics at Sapienza University of Rome, Master of Arts in Economics at the University of Essex (UK) and Master of Economics at the Oxford University. He has also taught at the Universities of Calabria, Camerino, Florence and Bari. He was a member of the didactic and scientific Council and coordinator of the module of Economics of the Eurosapienza Master on European studies. He is the author of many publications on matters such as contemporary protectionism, international economic cooperation, relations between globalization, income distribution and welfare state in advanced economies, international financial integration, and on the “decline” of Italian economy.

Antonio PRETO Present position: Head of Cabinet of Antonio Tajani, vice-president of the European Commission and Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship. Profile: Graduated in Law at the Bologna University, he has held different position in the public local administration. He began his career at the European Parliament, where he was covering several positions: as main administrator of DG for relations with political groups, member of the Cabinet of the EP President Hans-Gert Pottering, team leader for EU internal policies and legal and legislative counsellor of the EP President. Author of several articles on European law and of four books on European legal matters, he is also member of the editorial Committee of three international legal-administrative journals. He has been professor of Commercial European law at the Bologna University and visiting professor of International Commercial Law at the Malaya University in Kuala Lumpur.

Lorenzo SALAZAR Present position: Judge, Director of the Office for Legislative, International and Monitoring Affairs of DG for Penal Justice of the Italian Ministry of Justice.
Profile: Graduated in Law with honours at Sapienza University of Rome, following an experience of civil servant in the Public Administration sector, becoming a judge, he covered several functions both at the Ministry of Justice and in local offices. In succession of time, he was a member of the Cabinet of the General Attorney and Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union, expert on judicial cooperation (penal and civil) at the Permanent Representation of Italy to the European Union, member of the Cabinet of the vice-President of the European Commission and responsible for Justice, Security and Freedom. In this last role he dealt with matters such as terrorism, organized crime, penal and police judicial cooperation.

Simone VIERI Present position: Associate Professor of Economics and Agricultural Policy, Faculty of Economics, Sapienza University of Rome.
Profile: Graduated in Agriculture Science with honours at the University of Florence , he was previously teaching at the Universities of Florence and Urbino. He has covered several roles in relevant Italian institutions in the field of agriculture. He has been consultant for Common Agricultural Policy at the Presidency of the Italian Council of Ministers. At the Ministry for Agricultural and Forest Policies, he has been Head of the Technical Secretariat, Head of the Research office and Vice-President vicar of the Technical-scientific Council. From 2002 to 2006 he has been President of the National Institute of Agricultural Economics (INEA). He is author of several articles and monographs on issues regarding agricultural political economy such as the preparatory works for the National Conference about Agriculture and the Annual Reports, from 2003 to 2006, about the State of the art of the Italian Agriculture. He has been Scientific responsible for various national and European projects concerning Common Agricultural Policy (PAC).
